Your Bio

In my hometown of Assisi in Italy, at age 8, I dismantled a new Kodak folding camera, (Junior?) for which my uncle had paid a fortune, just to see "what was inside that was making pictures." At age 14, I began taking pictures with a borrowed camera from a friend. At 17, I purchased my first camera, a FERRANIA, for those who remember this brand, it was produced by one of Europe's leading photograph product manufacturers, a company eventually purchased by 3M. I still have that camera. Later, I began working with a friend and professional photographer, shooting weddings, sporting events, news, portraits, anything and everything. At age 21, I purchased my first used SLR camera, a Nikon F, the ultimate dream of a photographer. I still have that camera too. When Nikon came out with the EL, one of the first electronic cameras, I was able to buy a used one, which cost what seemed like an exaggeration at that time. I still have that camera as well. After that, I lost track of the many cameras purchased and sold. My first digital was a Nikon 900S. I love digital photography, no dark room, no messing around with chemicals, no more running water, no more stained clothes. I love digital photography.

Scotland, a few Summers ago. : These pictures were taken with a Nikon Coolpix 900, first digital camera made by the famous company. The biggest CF card available, at that time, was 42 Mb and the camera does not take larger CF cards than this size. Batteries were the first Ni-Mh which were good only for a few shoots before they needed a full recharge. Regular alkaline batteries weren't even good to fire up even a single shoot. I still have that camera and it still working fine.

Salone Del Gusto 2008 : These pictures were taken while traveling with a group of 14 people to Turin, Italy for the Salone del Gusto -Terra Madre extravaganza, a magnificent gastronomic happening where farmers and food lovers from around the world meet once every two years, all under one roof, to celebrate the pleasures of food.

This unique and incredible food event is the brain child of Carlo Petrini, founder of the Slow Food movement that advocates for good, clean and fair food.

These shots tell the story of our experiences during the 9 days of traveling in the Langhe area of Piedmont, an area world renown for its truffles, wines, hazelnuts, in a landscape of rolling hills replete with castles and historical sites.

We will offer this tour again in 2010 to another small group of 14 people. Check my web site for information: www.travelingtoitaly.com.

Trentino region in the Fall of 2009 : These are the pictures I took during an educational tour of the Trentino region in Northeastern Italy. This border region of Italy is a well-known wine production area and well the largest Italian producer of apples and small fruits like strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries. It’s also famous for excellent cured meat like the popular and ubiquitous Speck.

Venice seen through my lens : There are so many highlights and sidelights that can be seen off the beaten path in Venice. Plan to spend more than just a few days there if you can and plan your trip for the off-season. Venice has unique architecture features that can be appreciated best on foot. Its neighborhoods need to be explored one by one. I spent time focusing my lens on the human aspects of the city. I like to read about its history before leaving so I can tie some of the sights to the story of Venice while there. I recommend: The City of Fallen Angels, The Stones of Venice, The Merchant of Venice.

Images of Sicily : The pictures in this gallery were taken over a period of years on multiple visits to the island. Sicily it still an amazing destination; its history, art, architecture, gastronomy are layered on a tapestry of several civilizations from the early Sicanians to the late Bourbons, each one leaving indelible marks that are still visible today, yet the island remains so livable even in contemporary times.

The cultural richness of the island is still unsurpassed, and this richness is reflected in its unique culinary traditions. Its wines, used for years as the base for the world’s most expensive Barolos, Chiantis, and Bordeaux, are quickly and quietly reaching the top levels for quality and price in their own right.

Sicily is my favorite Italian region, and I would never miss a chance to travel there. If you are planning a trip to Italy or if you happen to be nearby, you too should spend time in Sicily. I can guarantee that you will not regret it.

Cilento - Paestum Archeological Park : Although Paestum has the best-preserved Greek temples outside of Greece, it is not as popular as the other Italian archeological sites. It is unfortunate because it’s an archeological wonder in an area that offers nice weather in all seasons, even in the hot Italian summer, Paestum’s temperature is mitigated by breezes from the nearby Tyrrhenian Sea. The climate is very mild in the winter months as well which makes it a good winter destination. I hope this gallery will give visitors the desire to pay a visit there; it is really worthwhile
